Conditions shift quickly with altitude and weather, and part of the drive runs through narrow gorges. Most travelers split the trip with an overnight stop in Kutaisi or Zugdidi rather than trying to cover the whole distance in one go, especially outside peak summer season. If you'd like to break up the journey this way, mention it when booking and we'll arrange the route with a planned stop.
Once you arrive, Mestia is striking in its own right — a mountain town of medieval Svan defensive towers, and Ushguli, one of Europe's highest continuously inhabited settlements, can be visited from there as a separate day trip. The region has been steadily gaining popularity for hiking, as well as winter skiing at the local resort.
