Gori and Uplistsikhe: Gori Fortress and a City Carved in Rock

Uplistsikhe, an ancient cave city carved into volcanic rock near Gori, Georgia

89 kilometers and a little over an hour from Tbilisi, and you're in a pagan world dating back to the 1st millennium BC. Near the town of Gori sits Uplistsikhe, one of the oldest towns on Georgian territory, carved entirely out of volcanic rock, and in Gori itself, a medieval fortress overlooking the confluence of two rivers.

What to See

Gori Fortress (Goris-Tsikhe)

A medieval fortress on a rocky hill right above the town center, with construction dating back to the 6th century. From its walls you get a view over the confluence of the Liakhvi and Mtkvari rivers and the whole town of Gori — the climb up takes 15-20 minutes.

The Cave City of Uplistsikhe

One of the earliest towns on Georgian territory, mentioned in written sources as far back as the 1st millennium BC. At its peak, it held over 700 rock-carved chambers — halls, streets, wine cellars, and a pagan temple where rituals were held before Christianity arrived. Today around 150 caves are open to visitors, and the site ranks among the most significant archaeological monuments in the Caucasus.
