Kakheti is Georgia's principal wine region, and Georgia itself is widely regarded by archaeologists as one of the birthplaces of wine — grape cultivation for winemaking here has been dated to roughly 8,000 years ago. Sighnaghi, ringed by 18th-century fortress walls above the Alazani Valley, is the region's most atmospheric town, known as the "City of Love" for its round-the-clock wedding palace.
The town walls, roughly 5 km long with 23 towers, were built in the late 18th century to defend against raids. You can walk sections of the wall on foot, and the cobbled streets of the old town — with their tiled roofs and wrought-iron balconies — are among the most photogenic in Georgia, with views over the Alazani Valley and the Greater Caucasus range.
A 9th-century convent (largely rebuilt in the 17th century) two kilometers from Sighnaghi, holding the relics of St. Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century. The grounds are beautifully kept, with flower beds and vineyards, and the viewpoint offers one of the best panoramas of the valley; further down the slope is a holy spring.
One of the country's largest wine producers, famous for an 8-km tunnel carved into the rock that stores around 25,000 bottles. For an extra fee, you can taste local varieties — Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, and others — on-site and buy anything you like.
The former 16th-century capital of Kakheti, destroyed by Persian forces in the 17th century. What remains is a hilltop complex — the Church of the Archangels and a monastery with unique 16th-century frescoes — with its own sweeping view of the valley.
A full day around Kakheti covers roughly 400 km with several stops, making it one of the longest single-day trips we offer from Tbilisi. We provide the car class you need for the whole day, with no extra charge for waiting at a monastery or winery, and a flexible route — stops can be added or dropped as you like.
